I was Born an Addict
Consumed by a desire to be bigger and better,
than the best my family could provide.
My mother, a raging whirlwind of wind washed worries,
and wasted dreams.
My father, a steam driven train de-railed
constantly by the weight of a thousand long past
aches and pains of a lost childhood.
The words of a mother's father raging
like a fire through a forest of thought,
in a young girl's mind.
Plowing away the last burnt ashes
of parenthood from their thoughts.
Tears fall like rain from a swollen sky,
dousing the flames.
A mistake made by two young lovers
in the midst of their own youth.
Me,
A mistake,
an accident.
Never meant to be born into
a broken family.
Me,
Proudly proclaiming my success to the world,
proving the words of my family wrong with every accomplishment
Proving that the choice made by those young
adults was the right one.
Feeding the fire of my addiction to success,
driving my every action in the direction
of being bigger and better
than the best they thought I could be.
