Baina
She is cleaning with a
broom in her hands,
wearing a yellow dress-
unkempt gray-streaked bun
“pasame esta baina”
“pass me that thing”
I don’t understand
She could be lying
on the worn couch
watching rabbit ear television in black and white
telling me, “quita esa baina del medio, that i can’t see”
“take that thing from the middle that i can’t see.”
“Baina”, anything-
It can be blue hair and a black
stick broom, a turquoise cuddly blanket.
But
“Baina” is the hard, green or
brown shell that covers the little
oval shaped beans we eat together
But no baina for a
Dominican is anything,
so go ahead, finish watching it,
baina,
and tell me how horrible your show is.
