thunderstorms
i am like a thunderstorm
booming and crashing in the night.
a storm whose violent strikes of white
light the sky up bright.
a midnight gale keeping loved ones stirring
with unstable wind-gusts that refuse to seize whirring
and turbulent downpours causing eyes to start blurring.
overcast veils send flashing blasts from up high
that cast dim rays through the drops they cry,
later to lead the sun to believe another lie.
of course the clouds will eventually fade
and the sun will ensure its appearance is paid,
but only to be disappointed at the mess i’ve made.
for others there is always going to be a rainbow.
for me it seems that is something the fates won’t allow.
why can i not find my calm now?
because i am like a thunderstorm.

In my Honors English class, I was assigned to write an extended simile of myself. This poem was inspired by recent events and negative emotions. Negative experiences often inspire my best work.
