Mother Knows Best
Be a doctor,
they said.
It makes good money.
Be a lawyer,
they said.
You’ll have a stable income.
Have a family,
they said.
It’s normal.
Conform,
they implied.
You won’t be looked down upon.
Don’t have tattoos,
they said.
You don’t know what you want.
Don’t get a nose piercing,
they said.
You’re too young.
Don’t be a writer,
they said.
You can’t support a family on that.
Don’t follow your dreams,
they implied.
That won’t make you normal.
