An old, purple jeep speeds down the road,
Hurtling towards an seen sharp corner.
Its breaks squeal.
The smell of burning rubber overwhelms the air
In slow motion, the jeep flips and spins in the air,
Like a trapeze artist at the circus.
A deafening crash sounds as the jeep lands on the shoulder of the road

An eerie silence lingers over the scene of the accident.
Only blaring sirens break the spell.
The police and EMTs investigate the scene with solemn faces,
With the knowledge that everyone who was in the car was probably dead.

Down the road, in a cozy brick cottage a mother and the piano man are waiting for the familiar sound of a jeep pulling into the gravel driveway.
But instead they hear sirens and see red and blue flashes.
A gasp escapes the mouth of the mother,
And the piano man tries to reassure her that it’s not as bad as they think.

The pounding of the officer’s fist on the door,
Is like a knife plunging into the mother’s heart.
As she opens the door, her worst fear is confirmed,
Something has horrible has happened to one of her children.

The piano man wipes away a tear from his eyes,
When he is sure no one is looking.
He stares at the old Steinway that his son used to play every day for hours on end.
His boy’s fingers would dance over the keys,
Creating angelic chords and composing songs out of thin air.
But now the opportunity is gone.
He spies a thick envelope with the word Julliard embellished across the front.
In the envelope is an audition time and date.

The piano man sits down on the piano bench fingers gliding across the keys,
His son used to fly across.
Soon the piano man’s fingers are gliding across the ivory keys, in a mad frenzy.
To the man playing the piano is like welcoming his son back home.

He sees a piece of white paper sticking out among the others.
his son’s spiky handwriting glows on the white paper.
The piano man realizes his son was writing a piece for his audition.
But the piece is incomplete, missing several stanzas.

It is then the father realizes he needs to finish the song for his boy.
So the piano man sets a pencil to the paper and writes.
