Laughter and an AMC Eagle
Confident in an outfit of contradictions,
She walks and talks as if she does not know defeat,
Hands soft without the weight of gravity,
Still young and foolish like the dent in the car door,
As life starts to sink in, white sneakers begin to tint.
Nothing stands in her way but freedom,
Yet everything around her is holding her back,
People so familiar will soon be unrecognizable,
Her beloved hometown will soon be undesirable,
Once foreign places become the source of her excitement,
All she can do is look forward and smile,
Yes it's been hard, but it has been worth the while,
Little does she know about that dusty bleak town,
It was a highlight of her life, but she is never turning back around.

This piece is about my mother at the end of her senior year of high school, before a family, including myself, was ever even a thought in her mind.
