Summer Days
An emergence of reds and yellows appear from the very bottom of the horizon.
You’ll find lovers catching this sight with fresh eyes and puffy faces
and fishermen making their way out into the unknown waters,
gleaming with hope.
Early risers greet each other on the streets,
walking beside their eager dogs as runners pass by.
Town is beginning to wake up.
Stores are opening and the smell of coffee roams Main Street.
Dads are buying bagels and muffins for families at home,
hair still messy from night’s rest:
The day has begun.
The sun is at high noon and umbrellas cover the beaches,
shading the sand with rainbow shadows.
Babies cry and children build castles,
Urging fathers to come join them.
Teenage boys roam the coast looking for pretty girls,
While college students enjoy their days off from summer work with friends.
When the dunes turn yellow and the sun shallows
you’ll find children growing tired on beach towels from day’s fun.
Parents sipping chilled beers and squinting from the harsh beams above,
laughing from the happiness warming their insides.
It is 8 o’clock and land is cooling down,
dinners are being had by families with big voices and loud mouths,
flashing whales on khakis and collared shirts.
Kids with golden brown noses and beach blond hair chase one another,
yelping and screaming from the excitement of budding friendships.
All the while ocean waves are crashing on the soft, cold sand.
Stars are beginning to show and the little ones are beginning to crash.
Mothers are tipsy and tired from the night's cocktails,
cradling their sleeping children as talks wind down.
Everyone is safe under the luminous moon tonight;
And as families carry their barefoot children home and into bed,
slide their own feet into their blankets,
mutter ‘i love you’ before they doze,
the world becomes quiet.

I wrote this during the summer, watching families day after day at work and at the beach. It inspired me to imagine myself in these types of families.
