Northwest territories,
all conquered
piece by piece.
I left home in search of
success. A generation
of go-getters,
they called us.
We’d be the ones
who’d build cabins
and homes,
who’d find acres
untouched, save for
scattered meadows
grazed by deer,
and clearings claimed
by another fellow.
The stories we heard
were all delightful.
So how could they possibly
forget to mention
the Indians, who
would raid our crops
and rob our wood
and take my daughter,
in return for
everything we stole
from them first?
