There is a battle occuring

Behind my eyes

A bloody, devastating battle,

And no side will surrender.

The casualties are high,

The death toll is rising.

No greater battle has been faught

Than the one in my head.

On the defense is wonder,

Inspiration and love.

The aggressor is fear,

Punishment,

Consequence.

Wonder tries to go about its ways, 

Tries to spread its wings and fly.

But fear sends out a battle cry,

Crushing wonder

With its vicious strategies.

Fear pushes wonder into a prison

Where it cannot flourish.

It murders with weapons of "what if"'s 

and "should be"'s.

Wonder hides, afraid of the risks,

Afraid of the weapons of mass destruction

Named expectations.

The outcome cannot be predicted,

It is all up to fate,

But there has been no greater battle 

Than the one behind my eyes.
