On Turning Thirteen
That day feels like none other
it feels as if you're crossing over to another universe
whole new way of life
the end of an era
a new beginning
Now people expect more of you
Suddenly there is no one to hold your had
Now people pressure you to do foolish things
or try new stuff
you must take it on yourself
to detect right from wrong
On that day you can say goodbye playgrounds
and say hello to homework
say goodbye to playing trains
and say hello to endless chores
say goodbye to video games
and say hello job interviews
Because suddenly at the moment you blow out your birthday candles you blow out the fire in your heart.
