Two weeks you're gone; The next two you're here.
It's hard only seeing you half the year,
But this is the only life I've ever known.
Yet it's a life I'm thankful to be shown.
You travel everywhere chasing that black gold;
You work day and night in the heat and cold.
You drill in the wind and rain;
Push through the blood and pain.
Just to provide a home for your kids and your wife,
And for those of you who don't know, it's not an easy life.
A roughneck misses a lot to get that paycheck.
It's hard for them to make plans because they might have to take a rain check.
But, even though you work miles away,
We'll still drive for hours a day.
It's not because we feel bad,
And I have never felt the least bit sad,
Spending holidays, away from home, but with my dad.
Some people call us oilfield trash,
But what's so trashy about living better than middle class?
This man has made a living, even though it can drive him mad.
I appreciate everything you do for me—I love you Dad!

The author's comments:

I wrote this poem to explain the life of my family and myself. My dad has worked in the oilfield for all my life and so it's something that I'm used to. However, other people might think that it's hard or something that they couldn't do. I have heard multiple songs from oilfield dad's and it encouraged me to write what happens on the other end of it because people don't realize how hard it is onl the family as well.
