Failure is not an option

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
I yell
as a huge wave
crashes down on me
like a stampede of Buffalo

One second I saw light
then total darkness
I could taste the salt water
as it rushed down my throat

I barely got enough strength
to swim to the surface
my arms felt like I was pulling the world
I gasped for air
coughing on the saltwater I had swallowed
I realized I was in a riptide

As I got carried out
I could feel the wind on my face
I had to get out of this
I remember my dad had said
swim to the side

I started to swim and could feel the water
pushing up against me
I had to stay calm
I saw the beach
getting farther and farther away
I kept swimming
and took a deep breath to calm down

My arms aching
but kept the thought in my head
that I had to stay above water
After an exhausting fight
I finally escape
the wave and watch as it goes past
Gray 2

I was about 70 yards out
My heart no longer pounding
as I casually swam back to shore
with the water splashing against my face

After a exhausting swim back
I collapse on shore
my mom and dad come
running up to hug me

now to this day
I don’t swim in
the ocean
