Dishes in the Sink
There are dishes in the sink.
There are dishes in the sink and you
Never taught me how to clean them, so
They sit and they rot in the sink.
There are dishes in the sink.
Dishes that you placed there
Year by year until
My sink became filled to the brim
With a mess I didn’t make.
There are dishes in the sink,
But if I tell you there are
Dishes in the sink, you will only
Place more and more dishes in the
Sink, so I learned not to complain.
There are dishes in the sink,
And I know you have dishes too,
But you hide the dishes behind a
Two-cent smile because
That’s what you were taught to do.
There are dishes in the sink,
God help me, they are
Cluttering up my life like they
Clutter up that sink and it’s
Really getting hard to ignore.
Well I’m smashing the dishes.
The plates.
The bowls.
The cups.
The forks.
The spoons.
The knives.
The knives.
The knives.
CRASH.
I’m breaking the dishes one by one until
That oh-so-cluttered sink becomes
Nothing but a clear, shiny surface
Empty,
Willing to be rewritten.
You always said you wished I did more chores.
