I Need A Beaver
When we met I was a broken floodgate.
The water flowed through; I was too weak to stop it.
You held me up.
You transformed me into a beautiful dam,
A powerful dam that did not let the water flow through.
You’d have killed a forest to keep me strong,
But your teeth were battered and your body was bruised.
You cut down more trees than you could carry.
So you left the beautiful dam you created.
And in your absence I fell apart.
The rapids devoured me.
I need you, beaver.

My relationship with my now ex boyfriend is what inspired me to write this piece. He represents the beaver in the poem, who helps me (the broken floodgate) and builds me into a stronger person (the dam), however when things got too difficult in his personal life... he left me. Which resulted in myself feeling very depressed (the dam breaking down). I hope that other readers will interpret this piece as I intended or as something that they could better relate to.
