Freedom (I. Am. Not. Free.)
August 27, 2014
I am free but I am not.
How can that be?
Don't seem so shocked!
America has fruited plains.
I have a heart with many pains.
I love a boy.
His name is Tom.
He has a ring for me.
I love a boy whose name it Tom,
But sadly we cannot be.
Distance is not the culprit.
Nor is health or wealth.
The problem is that of freedom.
I. Am. Not. Free.
To be a man and love a man,
Freedom only goes to a certain degree

In English class my teacher told the class to write what the word freedom means to each of us individually. As an African-American female and a minority in ym school, I could have made freedom to mean any number of things. I chose to write the poem from this perspective because I know about the struggles of African-Americans and the struggles of women and I have written about them many times, but this was something new for me and it is juat as worthy of a cause.
