Devilish Birds
There’s a bird out there
Calling my name
Singing to the stars
Loud, lacking shame
It sits in a tree
Weaving its tune
Its voice hardened by winter
Among the suns, it’s a moon
Perched above worldly troubles
Scouting for me
Filling the land with its hymn
And searching the sea
On its branch, it cannot be touched
In lee of the turmoil
It chants to the heavens
To summon me, off of the soil
Yet the gods do not listen
Fate—they persist
Will take my hand
And guide through the mist
But the bird out there
Calls my name
Sings to the stars
Loud, lacking shame
No longer a twinkle
I hear in the death of night
But a fanfare
Enchanting all men in the light
Usurping the skyward kings
It calls out my name
Drawing me to it
Stalking its claim
Mesmerizing is this bird
and I am trapped
And soon my soul,
It too has snapped.
