Waiting restlessly
You called me up
“be there in five”
It has now been seven
I try to breathe
Angry you do this to me
Why can you not see?
See that I laugh for you
Knowing you might be able to come
I made myself presentable
Just for your eyes
Because no one else is allowed to see
What I feel inside
I see you pedal up
Ten minutes after
Your cheeks are flushed and cold
I sit you down and look
I know the words that will come out
I already have heard them, but how would you know?
You have forgotten that I am here
Waiting to listen
Because that is what we do
When we love the ones we cannot
How are they supposed to know,
That they keep us up at night
With memories we had
Or wish we could make
How are they supposed to tell
That the smiles we wear are fake?
That the laughter does not fill
The cavity in their wake
Until they show up
And ask us how we’ve been
And we know that they mean it
Unlike other days
Because apparently they worry
About our forgotten soul
“They worry because they care”
That is what I’ve been told
But that was years ago
I now sit by your grave
And cry the tears I’d never show
Up until that day
I will now tell you
What I could not say before
I love you now
And I always will
My Best Friend

I wrote this piece about my neighbor, who is in some bad spots, and sometimes forgets that his friends are here to help him.
