Breaking Through
It feels like summer.
 Sun rays suffocating,
 trying to break through
 black wings
 like a crow’s I do bear.
 But beneath the surface,
 petals, blue velvet
 reaches up
 as sun rays inhale.
 Blue and yellow embrace
 into green.
 If only color could
 overtake the darkness,
 fill the empty spaces
 in my soul.
Yet there are so many rays,
 so many
 that I could sit here
 forever,
 light puddling
 at my feet
 till it breaks through
 the surface.
 And maybe someday
 I can drop
 my black wings
 and fly
 without.
