The Lady with the Yellow Shoes

Bright, yellow shoes,
Takes the narrow steps,
Up, up, up,
onto the blue bus.

Wild, dark hair
Fans out around her,
Wet from the glistening drops,
That fell from above.

Crazy, muddy black eyes,
Scan the blue bus,
As the narrow-minded people,
Leave no seat vacant.

Her presence visibly effects,
The naive women,
Who have yet to stop cowering,
Into the seats of the blue bus.

The prejudiced women,
Leave their handbags,
On vacant seats beside them,
Careful to not look the lady in the eye,
For a foolish fear of catching her unknown “illness”.

Her presence indistinctly effects,
The churlish men,
Who decisively provoke the careless lady,
To show misleading bravery and dominance.

The judgemental men,
Stiffen their posture,
And turn up their noses,
For the fake danger the lady bears.

Her brown-shaded aged features,
Shows not a pinch of exclusion,
But perhaps a dash of courage,
As she moves forward.

The driver turns a blind eye,
To the lady with the yellow shoes,
As she walks to the back,
And stands quietly, uninterruptedly.

The people, scared, don’t move an inch,
The lady unbothered, harmless waits,
Until it is time to depart the blue bus,
Kicked onto the damp, lonely streets.

The people, relieved, start moving again,
The lady with the yellow shoes,
Has left her space in the back of the blue bus empty,
Which the passengers have yet to fill.
