Listen
No, listen closely
And carefully to the crows screaming your name
To you coach on the sideline shouting hooray
To the shoes on the court running back and fourth
Shh, Tell me do you really hear it?
Or is it just the ball bouncing in my hands.
Fans, your support, you backbones-
Hey

Wake up,
Here let me tell you a part of my history
So you won’t be left in between mystery

Basketball has been my teacher,
My stress reliever
And my coach that I hate but strangely appreciate
See practices consists of
Cones and Pylons you’ll have to dodge,
Jumps you’ll have to make,
And people you’ll have to outrun face to face
It takes skills, technique,
Sweat, and thousands of drills
That will prepare you for realty,
The big games.

Listen
No listen closely
And carefully to the crowd screaming you name
To your coach on the sidelines shouting
But this time it isn’t hooray
To the shoes on the court running back and forth non-stop

Tell me do you really hear it?
It’s my heart beating, I can feel it
The ball bouncing in rhythm to my heart
I’m up in the air my arms extend
2 points down, not a sound
But the ball missing the basket and rolling out of bounds
Missed the basket. That counts.

See no matter how good you can dodge,
How high your jumps are,
And how fast you can run,
Some games and days will be yours,
But not all of them.

The author's comments:
My teacher told us to write something about ourselves and when it came down to writing something about myself all I could write about was my love for basketball. The more I wrote, the more II thought about life and what it offered just like the game of basketball. Because of basketball I was able to understand myself more and write a little something about how I see life through the game of basketball.
