Mass Media
Some say it's a terrible thing,
While others do not.
But is it much different
Than what we've already got?
A new type of citizenship,
Causes doubts to arise.
But is this the necessary reaction?
Are we right to scrutinize?
A web of quality information;
Why, that's what we need!
It's information with depth and pores,
So why hesitate to proceed?
It's our modernized way of life.
Almost too good to be true,
But can we all adapt
To this cultural break through?
It is all a matter
Of bridging the gap.
Because it's hard to accept change,
As other than a trap.
But why question it?
That's all a hopeless cause.
It already aids us
And seems to have no flaws.
It fills in our time of leisure
Granting us connection to all.
But its possible dangers,
Are not a matter that's small.
Could we get lost in
Our new world that is ideal?
We must hold tight to
The relationships that are real.
We can't get caught up
In the easy entertainment.
We can't be too careful,
For loss of reality we must prevent.
The skeptics among us
Are the only ones free of harm.
For luckily they have
A keen sense of alarm.
We need to set strict limits,
And promise to abide
To find the will power
And set make-believe aside.
Only caution and balance
Will prevent it from taking control.
Submitting to our boundaries
Is the ultimate goal.
But that's the thing!
It's not easy to pace,
For this is now
A part of the human race.
We are apt to get fastened
Under the belt of digital.
For there's an eerie attraction
To the simply fictional.
So all that is left
Is an inexhaustible need
For the cheapened entertainment.
I'd rather just read.
