'I never loved to read. One does not love breathing.' Harper Lee

Drip drop drip drip drop,
The recent storm brought to a stop.
Shadowed sun spills through ever green leaves,
But on the way are the forest thieves.
Birds emerge feathers in a flurry,
Colours bright blue speckled with a sky pink.
The culprits never think.
Mahogany gold- their only worry.

Drip drop drip drip drop,
Monkeys swing from the leafy canopy top.
Jaguars stalk speckled with a black cloud,
Their fur of gold, head held proud.
A hum in the backing mixed with clicks and caws.
A hum growing louder turning to a roar!
Feathers flutter as birds take off in a soar,
For now come the forest thieves with their own law.

Drip drop drip drip drop,
The rain forest crumbles with the machines mighty chop.
A frenzy of caws shrieks and howls,
The jaguar and her cubs begin to growl.
Paws now pound running on the ground.
While monkeys must only swing away,
Some have no choice but to stay.
All the cubs do is look around.

Drip drop drip drip drop,
As the rain starts the choppers stop.
The ground beneath slowly begins to flood.
The rain turning red from the recent shed of blood.
Grief lingers in the mother jaguars’ eyes,
As the sky pours forth the forests’ tears.
All minds now filled with fears,
But the rain drowns out the animal cries.
Drip drop drip drip drop.

The destruction of the Amazon rainforest inspired this piece. A current tragedy that we have the power to stop in its tracks. The question is how?
