The Mask
As forests were converted
to ash and stumps
to concrete
I spent the years to make
this Mask
And I’m concealed
Shielded from the
ridicule
Of despisers of the truth
and of nature
But in my time of hiding
I’ve found it hard to breathe
Asphyxiated by my all time
favorite Disguise
And cities take too long to build
to level them now
Still, exhausted by short breaths
I reach up to peel off the Mask
Only to find it superglued
to my skin
Fixed by the years’ adhesive
The truth eludes me now
Gasping for air
my greatest fear surfaces
My eyes close
I let out a strangled breath
and accept
That it might be too late
