Scarred
I can never let go
Of these battle scars
For they are my everything
And yet
Others murmur
Of my disfiguration, distortion
How can something so complete
Appear so grotesque in other’s eyes?
Why must I shy away, hide
The symbols of sure victory?
For the whisperers themselves
Hide under long sleeves
Emblems of the Great War
As they battle and lose yet again
Against their selves.
