I wake up late in the morning
to hear her talking on the phone
as she brushes her teeth
because she can never stop talking
for even one minute.

She puts her foot on the gas
of the golf cart.
We head to the Walmart
So she can buy ten of the same shirt
in all different colors.
And then decide that she doesn’t like them
and take the golf cart to the post office
to mail them all to me
a week later.

With our sunblock, snacks, and swimwear
all packed into the cooler
on the golf cart
we ride to the pool
and she makes me sit and watch
the 10:30 exercise class.
Then we swim from 11 to 1
because those are the only times
they allow kids.
And I remember when
she first moved there
and complained to managers
about the rule.

Dripping wet,
we pile our stuff and ourselves
back onto the golf cart.
I love running into KFC
in our swimsuits
and ordering the chicken, mashed potatoes,
mac and cheese and biscuits
Something I never eat at home.

I've spent my school year
excited for the summer
so that I could go visit my grandma.
Because I know that
even if I hit
the gold cart mirror
on the side of the garage
and knock it off,
Whenever I am with her
It will always be a busy day
packed with laughter and fun.
