The Born Defender
A small town boy
Raised on a farm
Born with a gun in his hand
Hunting and fishing was his life
Now off in a new land
Fighting for a country he loves dearly,
But it never seems to love him back
He fights for the freedom of his loved ones,
And even those unknown to him
Willing to die,
Even when some don’t seem to care
Now he is walking through this foreign land
Watching out for his fellow men and women
He has been in this same situation before
Twice he has been blown up
But he came back anyways
His dedication comes from the heart
He is tired and ready for a break,
But he doesn’t complain
He keeps walking
Watching out for trip wires
Or land mines
Making sure the vehicle stays safe
That doesn’t say much for him though
He walks ahead
Checking ahead to be sure,
Before the vehicle proceeds
It doesn’t end well though
He steps on the pressure plate
It should have ended him
He should have been killed
The sound was deafening,
The pressure was suffocating,
The heat was scorching
But for some reason he lived
He returned to his family
Never to return to that god forsaken land
Never to defend his country again
He got to see his beloved family and friends
But he is forever haunted by the memory
This man cursed to live with the aftermath
of his sacrifice
A sacrifice that helped to pay the cost of freedom
He knows better than anyone
Everything has a price, including
Freedom
