If you think about it
Really think
Humans are not afraid of much
Except death
We fear heights because we fear falling
We fear spiders because we fear the bites that kill
We fear closed spaces because we can’t breathe.
All these things stem from one inevitable destiny.
Death.

Although, when I think about it more.
I don’t fear death.
There, I said it.
I don’t fear death.
Because
Once you’re
Dead
Gone
Lost
Everything is just...
O
B
L
I
V
I
O
N
And oblivion doesn't hurt.
Oblivion doesn't remember.

And then I thought about it more
(Yes, I know, I over-think everything)
And even though I’m not afraid of D*E*A*T*H
I’m afraid of
DYING.

I’m terrified of that moment when the fatal blow has been dealt
Whether it’s a raging disease
or a car accident
or a knife.
I’m afraid of that moment when I know I’m going to die.
I’m afraid I’ll have to accept it.
Say my last words.
Think my last thoughts.
Then I’m going to be gone forever into a land unknown to anyone
Some say heaven and some say hell and some say nowhere.
All I know is that
this world is gone
No more flowers to smell
No more trees to climb
Sunsets to watch
Oceans to play in
Lunchtimes filled with laughter
And movie nights filled with popcorn and emotion
No more music
No more love
No more thoughts
No more feelings
No more.

And I’m terrified.

Lord Voldemort from Harry Potter actually inspired this piece, as did many other evil villains who were so afraid of death that they surrendered to a despicable way of living forever. It got me thinking why humans were so afraid of death anyway.
