They Come in the Night
The mist floats low to the ground
Painting the lifeless trees.
Breathing in life to those on one side
Taking it away from those on another
Oblivious to the cries.
Never stopping in the midst of chaos
Or pausing during shouts of retreat.
It is silently observing its prey.
Never ceasing to leave a trail behind
As it springs to attack.
A single tree remains
The leaves gone.
The bright green now a rusty red.
A lone bird rests on the highest branch
Inspecting the food below.
A man’s shout is unanswered
But heard by his brothers.
He fights to go home
But his legs crumble
The directions all blend as he sinks to the ground.
So he lays there
Alone but surrounded by others.
The picture in his wallet
Unaware of his position
Unaware of his death.
As the mist gets stronger and stronger
So does the wind
Pushing the chaos back upon itself.
Causing men to fall
Too early.
Soon there is nothing
Nothing left to distract from the horror.
Even the stars don’t shine as bright
In the midnight sky.
They came in the night.
