The thing about being a teenager
Is that everyone expects you to be depressed.
And you start off thinking:
This is wrong. I'm not one of those messed up kids
That lives around the block.

Another thing about being a teenager
Is that you start to feel sad all the time
And you stop going to church
Because you have too much homework
And you write depressing poetry
And walk around the block to meet those kids.

What really annoys me about being a teenager
Is that you start going to parties with boys
And all your friends like them
And you think:
'I'm never going to be like that'
And those kids that live around the block move away.

What's really good about being a teenager
Is that you can meet up with all the boys
And nobody cares
Because they cross the street so they don't have to talk to you
And if the boys like you
You walk around the block to meet them instead of those kids that moved away.

Something about being a teenager
Makes everyone suspicious of you
And if they see you with your boyfriend
They raise their eyebrows
And pick a table at the other side of the restaurant
Because you became one of those kids that lives around the block.

When you're a teenager
You get like what you don't want to be
And you're friends with depressed people
And people think you're anorexic
When you're just not hungry
But you're one of those kids that lives around the block, so you move away.

This piece was inspired by the stereotypes of teenagers in modern life. I had the idea for it after watching a documentary on the bad image of teenagers presented to the media.
