Crush
Lockers slam
murmurs of teenage conversations
down the hall
surround her as she stares at him
Her heart beats hard in her chest
as he comes closer
She takes in a hard deep breath
He walks by
she sucks all her insecurities into her stomach
waiting with a nervous smile
counting the steps until he turns the corner
She turns her head
looking over her shoulder shyly
until her eyes meet his
A flirty grin comes to his face
For a moment time slows
The lockers stop hitting their metal frames
Conversations hush
perfection
only for a moment
Until her nerves make
Her turn away
Her cheeks flush pink
And she bites her lower lip
Her heart beats fast
As she waits for him to walk away
she counts again
Waiting an extra second
She asks her friend
“ Is he gone?”
Her friend slowly nods
A nod that says
“Why are you so scared?
He likes you.”
She stares at her friend hard
her eyes telling the nod it’s wrong
with a gleam of hope that it’s not
She walks away slowly
a bounce in her step
that wasn’t there before.
