Midnight Drive
My dreams almost seduced me back to sleep behind the wheel
Singing heavy songs to my eyes
Breathing soft warmth into my madness.
And then I drifted off.
so the highway became a serpent
miles long
and I
the smallest fly.
Black skies
While I see life with my light-bulb eyes
The Serpent King- my midnight guide.
I would have stayed a fly
if it weren’t for those rumble strips
And lights that tap my eyelids every time they close,
Trying to disturb my wandering mind.
When I dodged the divider in my sensual swerve.
In that moment,
I became the snake.
I became the midnight guide.
Once you’ve tasted the nectar of Tartarus
the cruel memory will not escape you
its taste will lingers on your lips
a constant memento of what could have been
My car spun
One
hundred
and
eighty
degrees.
then halted.
So I stay
relinquishing my fate
while the buzzers are blaring.
Then starts a dainty drizzle
unleashing its cool catharsis.
A white fly landed on my windshield
& his light-bulb eyes spoke
to my light-starved eyes.
And then
I came alive for the first time.
