Wrong Turn

Preoccupied, leaving with thoughts that stay
Distance alone can’t take them away
But the car starts itself and the signs won’t stop blinking
Drive away, drive away, just to stop thinking

Pull out, red light, intersection first
Cross without looking, hope for the worst
No crash, disappointing, want something to burn
One-way bridge to the right, take a wrong turn

Wake up – alive, still on the road
Traffic oncoming, heart explodes
Speed up, change lanes, headlights flash
Trying to get out, or trying to crash

Three bullets later, with the bridge left behind
Adrenaline rush, my head’s finally mine
I’m alive, I’m alive, I’ve failed but I tried
So I turn off the street and pull onto the side

Then blue and red lights flash in the mirror
“Have you been drinking son, why are you here?”
No Sir not drunk, just lots on my mind
It was just a wrong turn, I promise, I’m fine

Roll down the window, take a sniff of my breath
No alcohol here, just an encounter with death
Here, take my license, I really don’t need it
It’ll happen again, but you go back to read it

You walk back slowly, tell me I’m clean
Free to go, no ticket, my records pristine
Just a stupid kid, be more careful next time
Take off speeding again, but really, I’m fine.
