This is not a love letter
or confession of any kind
I’d just like to take a moment
to tell you what’s on my mind

When I first thought you’d looked at me,
everything seemed brand new
I felt like I was falling
and thought that your eyes were blue

I imagined we would meet
somewhere in the velvet sky
We’d dance on gusts of wind,
watching the clouds go tumbling by

I drifted for too long a time;
my body became light
I knew it was time to descend
though I loved you with all of my might

My quaking legs felt foreign
on the old familiar ground
I was no longer hollow
when I heard a ringing sound

Truth led me to where you stood
and showed me what I hadn't seen:
your eyes were not blue nor brown
and certainly not green

And as I saw you for who you were,
I realized my mistake;
it was unfair to love you
for the color of your irises’ sake
