Do you feel like a man?

No means yes.
Stop means continue.
Do you feel like a man when you hit me?
Or put your hands all over my body?
Abuse means love.
You say I want you to do these things to me.
I just think I don't.
I guess I'm just confused.
Do you feel like a man when you have me pinned?
Mascara running down my face
Eyes wide with fear.
Terrified of what you might do to me next.
Fighting back makes it more fun for you.
It's like a game I can never win.
You love me,
Because if you didn't,
You would leave me.
I'm lucky to have you in my life.
Do you feel like a man when you have to explain my bruises to your parents?
I fell off the chair,
Tripped down the stairs.
Smashed my face on the concrete.
For so long you hurt me.
I lied to the people that truly love me,
Because telling them would only make it worse.
Fighting back, day after day.
Do you feel like a man because you don't control me anymore?
You lost your power and I gained mine back.
I did the one thing you said I never would,
Fought back and I won.
So much power within one punch.
You will always carry the pain you inflicted on me.
Do you feel like a man because you have to explain to a judge why your nose is broken?
Explain to a jury that you abused a young girl for so long.
Tell them that I am not the first.
But I'm sure as heel the last.
Tell me.
Do you feel like a man?

The author's comments:
This poem came from a real life experience. I hope the reader learns from this that, never do anything you don't want to do. Never let someone abused you whether it's physically, mentally or sexually. Get help if this is happening to you, don't wait till it gets worse because you could save a life. Your own life. Thank you.

Wow this was one of the most powerful poems I have ever read! The change of emotions as the poem approached the end was brilliant, and I'm so glad you discussed such an important issue effectively. Amazing work!
