Shrinking
She lives in a world of Lamarckian theory
prays to the gods of fire and sun,
sings with a note of superiority,
believes she’s almost won.
Clutches at the dreams she’s dreaming
tears her fingers through her skin,
hopes it’s imperfections she’s bleeding,
closes her eyes and imagines Thin.
And across the room the mirror calling,
Listen, I can show you another way to drown.
And she finds herself falling and falling,
turning adjectives into nouns.
She dies in a world of Lamarckian theory
sins for the gods of fire and sun,
forces a note of superiority,
prays she’s almost done.
