When the world was flat,
we’d roam the park in settling dusk.
Soccer balls fading to air, little girls
unbreakable – immortal – unaware.
Dancing through sprinklers
on long summer days, bikinis,
shameful – exciting – uncomfortable
on little girls with scabbed knees.
Holding hands and racing home,
outrunning imaginary fears.
The world; our own
as we tied best-friend-forever
promises into thread designs, bracelets
knotted with finality,
little girls’ idea of eternity.
