Worn Out Cliches
Find a penny,
Pick it up they say,
And all day long
You’ll have good luck.
Well I’ve picked pennies
all my life,
have pockets, jars,
hopes
filled to the brim.
Yet still I sit on the
Curb in surrender rain,
And let the cars wash me
Like a dirty window
Pane.
Put this hood over my eyes
And feel in some pockets
For signs of
Change.
And what do
I find?
Not a nickel but
A dime.
Well I have got
Ten pennies now,
Maybe things are
Starting to look up.
