I am Me
Sometimes I stop and I wonder:
Where am I? Who am I?
To others, I am defined by my history.
To myself, I am an enigma,
Left struggle with this perplexing mystery,
‘till I find out the greatest truth of all:
I
Am
Me
On the outside, you see stone.
I am not a window,
Nor am I a book,
With a cover so definite and a plot so clear.
Rather, I am a fortress,
With a disposition so severe.
Prisoner to my own mind,
Left to my own thoughts,
Scared of what lies behind
My walls of stone
I
Am
Me.
On the inside, it is only I that sees.
Scared of the past,
Apprehensive of the future,
Excitable, hesitant, burdened
Wise, open, awake.
I, I am unique
What is it then,
That makes me oblique?
I am alone,
But am I content?
Do I want more?
Where am I going?
Where have I been?
What will it to take to let someone in?
I
Am
Me
I have held the hand of the devil.
I have looked him in the eye.
I have witnessed God’s work
And seen an angel fly.
I have seen the flames of hell
And witnessed the most beautiful blue sky.
I know not where my journey began,
And I know not where it will end.
I fear where I’ve been,
And worry where I’ll go.
I wonder why I’ve been,
Why I’ll continue to be,
And if I‘ll ever be able to
Let my walls come crumbling down.
But if there’s one thing,
And one thing for sure,
I
Am
Me
Because I am who I am,
I will prevail
I will conquer
There is no definite answer
There is no predetermined truth
I was not chosen
And I was not condemned
I will not let my past define my future
But I will learn
I will grow
Shielded by my fortress,
conscious of its contents
I will never give in
For there is one thought
Whose presence I will always know
A thought so secure,
So definite
A thought that is mine
And will not be taken away:
I
Am
Me
