When She Remembers
Fifty years ago, she says, they met on the cobblestone path towards church
And love was the reward for her faith.
They got married, she says,
One year later.
Fifty years ago, she says, they met at a high school dance
And they became inseparable.
They got married, she says,
Two years later.
Fifty years ago, she says, they met on the first day of college
And fell in everlasting love.
They got married, she says,
Three years later.
Fifty years ago, she says, she never met him
And they never fell in love.
She doesn’t remember him now
One year later.
And now as he stands by her bedside,
She looks at him with a kind of sad emptiness
As if their love had dissipated like mist
And no longer existed.
But when he places his hand over her heart
Tears trickle down her face.
