Today we are free
Free from the grapple of shackles
It is taken for granted, assumed as our right
But behind this free reign lies a colossal fight.
A fight that many forgot
As the waves of time engulfed the scars, marks, wounds and all
They succumbed themselves for our sovereignty
But we severely lack empathy.
They took all the comers and tussled and wrangled
Till none were left standing on the battleground
Those Lord, Generals, Governors showed them the panoply alright
But they had vowed on their souls never to back out from the fight.
Tying their turbans terribly tight
Puffing their chests out with all their might,
Did they ever angst death?
Just thinking of the times makes me jitter and fret.
None thought about the end
All pursued that was ahead
Forfeiting all glee, charm, spark
They depressed on to the dismal, deplorable dark
They battled –o the most fearsome of behemoths
Who inclined to infuse them into the boiling broth
And who coercively fed their famished abdomens
So that they shan’t see the unhealthy omens
Of the victory of Tianzhu
And the bereavement of that ‘Who’
Yet with defiers as such, ascendancy was question less

Yes, they are the sole souls to whom we owe this independent-ness!

The author's comments:
I've composed this poem recently and have been willing to share it for quite awhile. This composition is exclusively dedicated to those who perished themselves for the love of a free Indian republic, for SWARAJ. They are the true heroes without whom the idea of a free India would merely remain a dream. The poem goes through the hardships they faced and embellishes their undying spirit to establish the "India of today."
