Curious Enough
Curious enough, that night she was happy,
Good grades, athletic, nice enough boyfriend-
What could go wrong right?
And yes she was still happy, when she got into his car.
Just a little drunk, he told her.
It’s no big deal.
Still happy, still smiling when his truck swerved
The first, of many, times.
Yeah, they were just teenagers
Driving home on a friday night, head over heels
in love.
And as his truck screeched
over into the other lane,
she was still smiling. Still laughing
at one of his stupid jokes, when his fingers slipped
out of hers, and he flipped
head over heels, through the windshield.
Cuts all over her face, glass imbedded in her skin,
smile frozen, as a strangled scream escaped her lips.
Curious enough, that night she was happy.
