Father and Son
I’m not focusing on mass anymore.
The young man sitting behind me is tall,
looks older than me –
but he’s brought a backpack filled
with Sesame Street puppets.
The son is restless, bored –
but the father never gets
annoyed. Instead, he rubs
his son’s shoulder,
he folds his son’s hands
in a gesture of prayer,
He looks at his son with
unending patience –
But his son spits at him.
His son hits him.
His son doesn’t understand how to
love his father back.
The mass is ended. Go in peace –
And they leave –
but this father’s job is never-ending.
He must continue with his
life-long task –
of consistent patience
with his son who can only respond
with spits and hits,
who folds his hands
in awkward prayer.
