Jordan
Most children want things...
A dog, cat, toys, fish
Not me, I wanted a tree
A big, beautiful, blossoming tree
With branches to climb and leaves to change
A tree to block the hot summer sun beating onto my deck
A tree so full and green in the summer
That it makes me forget about its bareness in the winter
A tree that could be my own, like a pet
Except i could climb the tree
And watch it grow from a tiny little tree
Into a tree that stretches over my entire house
I named this tree
His name is Jordan
Even as i write this poem
I look out my window and see Jordan standing tall
Like a proud warrior who fought through the battles of harsh winters
And house renovations that almost caused his death
A tree that had bats swung against it
And children dangling from it
Somehow through all this Jordan remained beautiful.
