The Train
When driving out in the dark, I am accompanied
Only by the twinkling stars, and the crescent moon,
When on the radio the song comes on "Love Lost."
When thinking of robots, lemon bars, black sweaters, when smelling motor grease, or your musky cologne, or freshly mowed lawn,
When seeing happy couples embracing each other in the halls,
The music on my iPod shuffles and the song comes on,“Love Lost."
How uncomfortable I became in my own skin,
Scratching, itching, screaming; trying to rip my way out.
Out of the void,
Out of the lonely nights,
Out of the silence that now fills my room, where our laughter used to reside.
I sit back, fists unclenching, shoulders releasing.
The train tracks tick the time away,
A learn’d lady lounges across from me,
Galaxies are painted across her skin, marks left gingerly on her by the universe.
Crows feet by her eyes, she has earned her tiger stripes.
She imparts to me: “The only person who can save you is yourself.”
