Coffee
“I need to get this off my chest.
I think I love you,”
He said to the woman across the counter.
They had known each other for years;
Just now getting together for a night.
Having breakfast in the morning
After their night of drunken stupors and gropes.
He didn’t dare try to tell her differently after that.
She just sat there, awkwardly as ever.
Moments went by without a word.
He pours himself a cup of coffee as he waits:
Drinking it black, not daring to make a noise.
When she finally speaks
She first takes a long, deep breath
Making sure to choose her words with care:
“Do you always drink your coffee black?”
