Walking in the light

Pitter Patter,
Rain Drops,
Skies getting dark,
Roads along way down.

Air gets cold,
Darkness grows,
Light fades away,
I should be at home.

The wind blows hard,
Rain falls harder,
The animals seek shelter,
The crows caw away.

I stop walking and look up,
The clouds cover the sky,
In a dark smoky cover,
That smothers the sky.

I glance down,
It’s been beginning to flood,
The rain soaks through me,
Weighing me down.

It’s too much of a burden,
I fall,
Why get up?,
I listen to the rain.

The water rises around me,
Slowly drowning me,
It swirls around me and drags me,
Into an underwater prison.

Lightning and thunder occur,
It strikes down the trees,
Thunder booms and fills the air with a wrecking sound,
That screeches the air.

Dark thoughts fill my head,
Negativity clouds my judgment,
Darkening my skin even more,
Into a hollow, vengeful, depressing beast.

As I slowly get swallowed by the darkness and water,
A fire lights,
Making the water evaporate,
The clouds begin to part.

Lightning strikes against it,
The fire counters back,
I look closely through my fatigued eyes,
And make out a person.

Who it might be? I’m not sure,
The darkness that covered me yields,
And loses its grasp on me,
I take a step forward.

Then another,
And another,
And another,
Till I’m running.

As I run I smile,
The dark clouds begin to fade,
The fire and I merge as one,
And I’m fighting the lightning.

I see it’s true form,
A beast,
Something that needed to be tamed or erased,
So I did.

Pouring out all my strength to erase it,
I blink and it’s gone,
I slowly look around,
Everything is back to normal.

The sun is up,
It’s a warm day,
The aftermath of the battle,
Leaves a rainbow.
A double rainbow,
A beautiful sight that doesn’t cancel each other out,
But balances,
I smile as it shimmers in the light.

The animals come out of their shelter to play,
Friends come to greet me,
Family’s talk and laugh,
A light shines on me.

The fire that helped me is gone,
Forming into a cross,
That’s wrapped around my neck,
With the words “Faith” engraved on it.

I wonder what happened,
Maybe I was in a dream or another world,
None of that was real,
But still I glanced at the cross.

It came when I was going to give up,
To say not to give up yet,
A shield, a memory, a sword,
To leave my loneliness and never forget.

The author's comments:
In my poetry class we had to choose an emotion to write about so I chose Loneliness. I wanted to show how someone could feel if their depressed and I used light and dark elements to show that. I referenced the cross as a way of demonstrating the light and how believing in yourself and staying positive can help you through any storm.
