and the darkness washes

over you like a blanket

for telling many tall tales

It’s the time when

wolves come out,

howling at the moon


Night is when teens

sneak out to party

and small children

dive under the covers

for a lullaby


When students finish homework

and teachers

spend time grading

and then creating more


When trick-or-treaters

do their business

and parents

get tired

and just leave the candy out

in a free-for-all


It’s when Santa comes down the chimney

and presents go under the tree

the time

children lie in bed

hardly waiting

for the morning to come

stars are out

then the sun rises
