"...knowing of photosynthesis, genetics, protein folding, and quantum electrodynamics does not lessen the beauty of a flower, but rather elevates that flower from being merely pretty to the status of a miracle."

Golden petals, the
bear-fuzz center.
Its arms outstretched
To touch a feather
Of the Sun's warmth,
Of the Sun's kiss.
It faces me and stares
As I walk by. It touches
The Sun.
It touches the sky.
My arms stretch but fall
short.
I walk on by.

Sun-dried petals, the
charred, browned center.
Its arms outstretched
Have lost the feather.
The hand swooped down,
Had ripped it away.
It faces dirt and stares
As I walk by. It touches
The grime.
Hand's touch, it dies.
My arms stretch but fall
short.
I walk on by.

The author's comments:
I walked my dog quite frequently in the fall, before the weather froze everything. One morning, I saw one sunflower on a neighbor's lawn. It was the only one, and it was small and close to the ground; I was convinced it grew wild. The next morning, I walked the same path but couldn't find it. Instead, I found a hole in the dirt. A few yards away, it was there, dead on its side. I didn't know how to describe my disappointment. I don't know if I was truly disappointed. I don't know if there's a word that can do this emotion true justice.
