Beautifully Terrifying

The clouds covered the lake
flares of glowing lightning shoot from
the stars.
The light was
beautifully frightening.
Shooting,
dropping to the earth,
upward to the sky.
The light was surrounded by bleakness,
brimming with screamed,
unspoken words.
No roaring of lions,
or thunder
as bowling pins
hit the floor.
Simply silence.

The heat surrounded my body and
sent a shiver down my spine.
My eyes squinted from the bright light,
flashing in the middle
of complete darkness.
The smell of dust and staleness was
heavy from the floor.
I could see the small dust bunnies
floating through the air.
I wasn’t watching them though,
I was looking past them,
to the blankness beyond.

The utter fear
awe I felt,
watching such power,
such brightness
amidst such darkness.

It was beautifully alarming,
beautifully chilling,
beautifully terrifying.

This is a memory of me watching a lightening storm in the middle of the night when I was younger.
