Iowan Winter

In this nightmarish symphony
Temperatures swing
As every member of the silent opera
Raises a wing
Their voices will return
But who knows when?
Perhaps the idea of global warming
Will have returned by then
And as the sky clouds up
Iowa’s weather will choose
To do some other thing
Tornadoes, maybe?
Winds strong enough to cause whiplash
Whilst warmth winds up and down
Dipping from hot enough to fry an egg
To cold enough to sting
The precipitation surprises us still
Although it really shouldn't
Surprise! No snow
While breezes blow
And it rains
Well below freezing
Eventually the choir’s laryngitis
Will be forced to run its course
And then it’ll just go back
And affect its source
And then it’ll warm up for good
And it’ll be safe to go outside
And we’ll consider rejoicing in spring
